Faux Wood and Vinyl Blinds: The Basics

EverWood® Faux Wood Blinds are an affordable alternative to hardwood options and resist moisture damage. They are lightweight, durable, and easy to care for. The authentic wood appearance allows you to bring the inviting warmth and character of hardwood blinds to any room in your home.

Vinyl blinds share many of the characteristics of faux wood options. They are durable, lightweight, and moisture-resistant. If you’re working with a tight budget, vinyl blinds are an excellent solution. When deciding between faux wood and vinyl blinds, it comes down to style preference and whether you need horizontal or vertical orientation.

Vinyl Blinds Options

  • Somner® Vertical Blinds: Regarding customization options, Somner® Vertical Blinds lead the pack with over 170 color and material combinations.
  • Vertical Solutions® Vertical Blinds: Subtle textures and a neutral color palette make these vinyl vertical blinds perfect for rooms where you want your furniture and décor to steal the spotlight.

Do I Need Horizontal or Vertical Blinds?

Both orientations of blinds have applications to which they are ideally suited. Horizontal blinds are ideal for standard-size, uniquely shaped, or bay windows. Vertical blinds are the solution for oversized windows and sliding glass doors. There are a few other differences between the two styles:

  • Light control: Faux wood horizontal blinds are available in 2 or 2 ½” wide slats that tilt up and down to adjust the amount of incoming light and privacy in a room. The slats close tightly together to help keep unwanted light out. Vertical blinds have wider 3 ½” louvers that turn 180 degrees, offering more versatile light control, but do have more prominent light gaps even when you fully close the louvers.
  • Installation: Installing horizontal blinds is straightforward; mount them inside or outside the window frame. Vertical blinds are a bit more challenging to install, but proper installation gives them the smooth gliding motion they’re famous for.
  • Maintenance: Vertical vinyl blinds collect less dust than faux wood horizontal blinds and are easy to clean with a dry or damp cloth. However, dust and other debris can build up in the track of vertical blinds, which isn’t an issue with horizontal ones. Vertical blinds get another point because you can replace individual louvers if necessary instead of the whole set.
