Horizontal and vertical blinds are fantastic window covering solutions with exceptional light-blocking capability. Vertical blinds are great for large windows and sliding glass doors, where horizontal blinds may be a better fir for windows that are more standard or unusually shaped.

Similarities
Both vertical and horizontal window blinds are designed with adjustable slats to offer exceptional light control and privacy. The slats of vertical blinds rotate 180 degrees, so they have a slight advantage over horizontal blinds with respect to light control.
Horizontal blinds use material like hardwood or aluminum. Most vertical blinds also use metal and vinyl vanes, but fabric slats are also available.
Benefits of Vertical Blinds
- Vertical blinds are great for oversized windows and sliding glass or French doors. Horizontal blinds can be custom-made to fit a variety of window sizes, but lifting large sets of vertical can be cumbersome.
- Vertical blinds are a breeze to clean. They collect less dust than horizontal slats and vinyl and metal varieties can tolerate many cleaning methods without risking damage.
- The slats of vertical blinds are wider than horizontal varieties and rotate 180 degrees, giving them more flexibility when it comes to controlling light and privacy.
Benefits of Horizontal Blinds
- The slats of vertical blinds can sway, but you can rely on horizontal blinds to always remain stationary.
- They’re ideal for tall or narrow windows. Horizontal blind slats can be as slim as ½” wide, making them an excellent fit for narrow windows.
