Layering Window Treatments from Hunter Douglas
Window treatments, regardless of which type you choose, help add privacy, block unwanted light, and protect your home’s interior from damaging UV rays. Window coverings can also help maintain a room’s temperature, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Layering your window treatments is a way to bring the style of your space up a notch and can be easy to do. We’ll be focusing on layering various window treatments with drapes, but you can mix and match most window coverings to your liking.
Drapes with Blinds or Shades
When choosing a base layer, if you choose hard window treatments, such as Parkland® Wood blinds, you can go with any color or pattern of drapery that matches the rest of the room. Hard window treatments tend to come in neutral solids and wood-like stains. If soft treatments, such as Roman shades or cellular shades, are the base layer, choose a drapery with a pattern and a base layer in a complementary color. You can have patterns on both the top and base layer, just be sure they go well and keep one pattern on a larger scale than the other.
Drapery & Roman Shades
Vignette® Modern Roman shades are one of the most popular window treatments because they are available in such a wide variety of fabrics and colors. Layer a printed Roman shade with solid drapery to make the shade really pop. Having two soft window treatments also creates a very welcoming, cozy feeling in a room. Go with light colored Roman shades and blackout drapes for sunlight during the day, and a dark, sleep-worthy space by night.
Layering with Cellular Shades
Duette® Honeycomb Shades are great for homes with extreme climates or with older windows. The pockets formed by the cells trap air to form a layer of insulation. The addition of drapery in a heavy fabric will increase this insulation, and your home’s energy efficiency, even further. Open the drapes during the day to fill your room with gently diffused light and close them in the evening for privacy and great sleep.
Shutters as the Base
Shutters give your home an elegant character with classic style. Adding drapery will bolster this exquisite aesthetic, and your home’s resale value will increase. You can create awesome contrast by layering dark colored shutters with light drapes, or vice versa. Layering window treatments gives your space eye-catching appeal and ups the functionality of your windows.
