Cleaning Tips for Your Window Treatments

Window treatments enhance the look and style of your home and provide privacy. But if your window coverings are dirty, dusty, or covered in fingerprints, they won’t do much for the beauty of your room. Dust your blinds whenever you clean your house, and they’ll need a deep cleaning less often. You should aim for a thorough cleaning every 3-6 months or more frequently if you have kids or pets. We’ve put together some tips to help make cleaning your shades more effective and efficient. So put on your favorite music and get ready to get your hands dirty and your blinds clean.

Vinyl, Aluminum, Painted Wood, Faux Wood

These window treatments are a breeze to clean. Start with the slats completely closed and hold the bottom edge with one hand. Start at the top and use a feather duster or clean cloth (even a sock will do) to wipe each slat. Rotate the slats when finished and repeat the process. Make sure you don’t forget the windowsill. Pro tip: wipe down the entire covering with a dryer sheet to help repel dust in the future.

Heavily Soiled Vinyl or Aluminum Blinds

Lightly dusting isn’t enough to get rid of deep-down grime. Fortunately, you can get rid of set-in dirt without having to take your blinds down. Use a microfiber cloth dampened with water and a squirt of mild dish soap to wipe slats. Use a cloth dampened with clean water to remove any soapy residue.

Roman Shades

To lightly clean Roman shades, lower the shade completely and use a vacuum brush on low suction. Minor stains can generally be treated using a stain remover made for fabric but give one of our team a call to ask if you’re unsure.

For more filthy Roman shades made of washable fabric, remove dowels and wash according to the care instructions. Allow the shade to air dry and press or steam away any wrinkles. Never place your Roman shades in the dryer as it can cause shrinkage. If your shades are not made of washable material, we suggest taking them to the dry cleaner.

Wood Blinds & Shutters

Natural wood is susceptible to warping and discoloration if it becomes too wet. Begin by wiping the blinds with a dry cloth. Lightly spray a soft, clean cloth with lemon oil or a high-quality wood polish and wipe each slat, beginning at the top of the window treatments. Finish up by wiping the slats with another dry, clean cloth to ensure all excess oil has been removed from the surface.

Wood blinds or shutters that are particularly soiled can be cleaned using a solution of slightly warm water and a mild detergent. Dip a cloth into the mixture and wring well so the fabric is damp but not wet. Wipe each slat and dry immediately with a cotton cloth to prevent moisture damage.
